NALSAR UNIVERSITY OF LAW ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

Admission to the B.A LLB & LL.M. courses in NALSAR University of Law are made strictly on merit, based on a Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) to be conducted together by NLSIU-Bangalore, NALSAR-Hyderabad, NLIU-Bhopal, NUJS-Kolkata, NLU-Jodhpur, HNLU-Raipur and GNLU-Ahmedabad.
The National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) University of Law is a fully residential University engaged in teaching and promoting research in law and its allied disciplines. It was established in 1998. It conducts courses in Law at the graduate, post graduate and doctoral levels. The University Campus is located in a 50 acre site near Shameerpet Lake, 28 kms away from the city. The University has signed an MoU with Griffith University Australia, The University of Western Ontario- Canada, The University of New South Wales-Australia for student exchange programmes and faculty exchange programmes and with The Law School, King's College-London, University of Warwick-U.K, University of Oklahoma-USA, Santa Clara University-USA, Southern Cross University -Australia for exchange of faculty and also for co-operative research.

ELIGIBILITY
5-year integrated B.A., LL.B.(Hons.) - To be eligible for admission, a candidate should have passed the Higher Secondary School / Intermediate Examination (10+2) or its equivalent recognised by the University with 50% marks in the aggregate and be less than 20 years of age of as on 1st July, of the year of admission (22 years in case of SC/ST candidates, 25 years in case of persons with disability). Candidates awaiting results of the qualifying examination can also appear for the test on condition that they produce proof of having passed the qualifying examination with the prescribed marks at the time of intewrview. Only those candidates who secure the minimum prescribed marks at the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) qualify for inclusion in the Merit List.
LL.M. (Master of Laws) - To be eligible for appearing in the entrance test to the two year LL.M. Degree Course, a candidate should have passed the LL.B. / B.L. degree or an equivalent degree from a recognised University with not less than 55% of marks in the aggregate. Candidates awaiting results of the qualifying examination can appear for the test on condition that they produce proof of having passed the qualifying examination with the prescribed marks at the time of interview
M.Phil. (Master of Philosophy) - The candidate shall have an LL.M. Degree either from NALSAR or from any other recognised University, securing not less than 'B+' grade or an aggregate of 55% marks or its equivalent.
Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) - To be admitted to the candidature for a doctoral degree an applicant shall have:
(i) obtained a master's degree in Law of any recognised University securing not less than 55% marks or its equivalent in grade or
(ii) obtained a master's degree in Law of any recognised University with 50% marks or its equivalent in grade and have had atleast five years full-time teaching/ judicial/ professional/ administrative experience in the subject in a recognised college/ University or
(iii) obtained a degree in Law and MPhil in Social Sciences or Humanities or Sciences of any recognised University with not less than 55% marks or its equivalent in grade or PhD in any discipline or
(iv) obtained a degree in Law and MPhil in Social Sciences or Humainities or Sciences of any recognised University with 50% of marks and have had atleast five years full time teaching/ judicial/ professional/ administrative experience in the subject in a recognised university/ College.
Proximate Education - A candidate desirous of seeking admission to PG Diploma in Patents Law, Cyber Laws or Media Law should have a Bachelor's degree from any recognized university or an equivalent qualification. Those seeking admission for PG Diploma in International Humanitarian Laws should have a bachelor's degree from a recognized university or equivalent and should have atleast two years experience.

EXAMINATION
Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) for LLB and LLM is conducted in the month of May, every year. Foriegn Nationals are exempted from taking the admission test.

The CLAT paper for under graduate programme will be of 2 hours duration with 200 multiple choice objective type questions carrying a total of 200 marks.
The different subject areas of the exam
  1. English Including Comprehension
    The English section will test the candidates’ proficiency in English based on comprehension passages and grammar. In the comprehension section, candidates will be assessed on their understanding of the passage given, its central theme and meanings of the words used therein, etc. The grammar section will focus on correction of incorrect grammatical sentences, filling of blanks in the given sentences with appropriate words, etc..
  2. General Knowledge and Currents Affairs
    As far as general knowledge is concerned, the candidates will be assessed on their general awareness including static general knowledge. Questions on current affairs will test candidate’s knowledge on current affairs.
  3. Mathematics
    This section will test candidate’s knowledge on elementary mathematics, i.e. mathematics taught up to Class X.
  4. Legal Aptitude
    This section will test candidate’s interest towards study of law, research aptitude and problem solving ability. Questions asked may comprise of legal propositions/ principles and a set of facts to which the said proposition/ principle has to be applied to arrive at a most reasonable conclusion. Such propositions may or may not be ‘true’ in the real sense; yet the candidates will have to assume that the given propositions are true and answer the questions accordingly. An example of such legal proposition may be that any person who speaks in a movie hall and disturbs others who are watching the movie will be banned from entering any movie theatre across India for one year.
  5. Logical Reasoning
    The purpose of the logical reasoning section is to test the candidate’s ability to identify patterns, logical links and rectify illogical arguments. It will include a wide variety of logical reasoning questions such as syllogisms, logical sequences, analogies, etc. However, visual reasoning will not be tested.
Post-Graduate Programme :
The entrance test for Post-Graduate Programme is held along with the entrance test for the B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) The 2 hour test carrying a total of 150 marks consist of two sections.
Long Essay Type Descriptive Questions
(Covering Constitutional Law and Jurisprudence)

Multiple-Choice Questions
(Covering all compulsory law subjects prescribed by the BCI for the Under-Graduate Course except Constitutional Law and Jurisprudence)

(50 questions of 1 mark each)
Note: For Under Graduate and Post Graduate exam, there shall be a system of Negative Marking wherein 0.25 mark will be deducted for each of the wrong answers to multiple choice questions.
Tie-Breaking
In the event of equal marks scored by two or more candidates in the CLAT, the tie will be broken by the following procedure and order:
  • Higher marks in the section of legal aptitude in CLAT
  • Higher age
  • Computerized draw of lots
ADMISSION AND COURSE DETAILS
·         BA. LLB - Admission to the First Year of the 5-year B.A., LL.B.(Hons.) degree programme is made strictly on merit, based on the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT).
·         The total number of seats available for the LLB course is 80 of which 70 are filled on the basis of Common Law Admission Test. Of these 70 seats, 15% (11 seats ) are reserved for SC candidates, 7.5% (5 seats) for ST candidates, 30% (horizontal) for Women candidates and 3% (2 seats ) for Persons with Disability. The remaining 10 seats are allotted to Foreign Nationals i.e candidates possessing citizenship of country other than India.
·         LLM - Admission will be granted based on Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) and interview. The duration of LLM course is 2 years and each year comprises two semesters. The candidates can choose their area of specialization from among Human Rights, Environmental Law, Intellectual Property Law, Corporate Law and Governance (including International Business), Insurance Laws, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law. 
·         The number of seats available will be 60 subject to SC (15%), ST (7.5%) and disability (3%) reservations. There is no separate quota for foreign students.
·         Foreign Nationals : In both the cases of B.A LL.B. and LL.M., foreign students are exempted from taking the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). They will be admitted directly on the basis of their performance in qualifying examination, overall academic record and proficiency in English language. All foreign candidates must apply directly to the Registrar, NALSAR, Hyderabad in the prescribed application form with all supporting documents.
·         M.Phil.- The admission is based on merit as determined on the performance of the candidates, at the interview and presentation of research proposal, to the Admission Committee constituted by the Vice-Chancellor for the purpose.
·         PhD - The university has provision for both full time PhD and part-time PhD. Enrollment for PhD is normally full time wherein the candidate will have to put in a minimum of two-years residence of which 18 months shall be in the university. Three years is the maximum time that a candidate can avail for completion of work and its submission for evaluation.
·         For part-time candidates time available for completion of work and submission for evaluation will be a maximum of 5 years. The enrollment will be deemed to have lapsed after a period of 3 years for full time candidates and 5 years for part time candidates. Granting of any extension period will be based on the research Committees discretion.
·         Proximate Education -  Candidates intending to enroll can request for the application form and information handout from the Coordinator after payment of requisite fee by Demand Draft. The duration of the course shall be a period of one academic year.
·         Application Details :

·         Prospectus and application forms for 5 year LLB, BL (Hons) and LLM can be obtained by post by sending a demand draft for the requisite amount of fees to the address mentioned by the university. For LLB course it can also be obtained from main branches of Indian Bank at select centres on payment of the requisite fees.
